The mission of the Student Welfare Service, which falls under the Department of Higher and Tertiary Education, is the granting of state student welfare (student grants and student allowances). Pursuant to the provisions of the State Student Welfare Act of 2015, the student grant is given to families which are permanent residents in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and have a child who is a student studying either in Cyprus or abroad at a graduate or postgraduate discipline. The proprietor of the student grant can be the student himself, provided he/she has created his/her own family or if he/she is an orphan or abandoned. The student grant is given for gaining a single degree in each study cycle, provided the family meets the income, assets and other criteria laid down in the related law. Per the related law, student allowances are given to subsidize specific needs, taking into account economic, property, social and other criteria. The students entitled arise from the evaluation of their applications, which is based on a points system that takes into account economic and social criteria, in accordance with a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers.
